Mosses

Mosses are a very diverse group of organisms, with about 10,000 species worldwide. They thrive in moist conditions, which is why Britain has nearly 800 different species, about two-thirds of all European mosses.

Mosses are mainly green, flowerless plants which reproduce using spores or asexually. They play an important role in ecosystems by preventing soil erosion and capturing water and nutrients. They also provide shelter for microfauna and a place for plant seedlings to germinate in successional and regeneration processes.

Total species recorded on Dundreggan: 179

Order: Andreaeales

This Order contains only one Family. The spores are released when the capsule splits down four longitudinal seams, which is different from the methods used by other mosses.

Andreaea rupestris

Andreaeaceae (Rock Mosses)

As their name suggests these mosses prefer rocky habitats where they form tufted colonies which, if growing closely together, can form large mats. There are 10 British species which usually have blackish or reddish stems.
