The Beach House is a wheelchair-accessible, dog-friendly guest space adjoining a family home on the Fife Coastal Path.

It was built in the Victorian era and what is now the guest space was originally the Town Baths. We set up this grove to offset the carbon used by our guests.

We have a Loop Energy monitor installed which shows the total household average energy use per year of:

• 4,680 kwh electricity
• 20,800 kwh gas

We generously estimate that a third of this is generated by the guest cottage:

• 1,600 electricity
• 7,000 kwh gas

That's about 1.75 tonnes of carbon, according to CarbonFootprint.com.

As it takes 4 trees to offset one tonne, by planting one a month, we should offset three tonnes a year, which easily covers the carbon emissions. Following teh extra restrictions we need to take around Covid risks, we started planting an extra tree, so now plant 2 a month.

Does this make it ok?

No! This doesn't mean we can use up power with reckless abandon. We still do everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment.
