On the occasion of what would have been her 50th birthday, the opportunity to have a grove of living, growing trees planted in memory of her, came to me as a wonderful way of not only celebrating Sveta's birthday but also of remembering her all the time.

Sveta was a hospital doctor who lived in Kazan, the principal city of The Republic of Tatarstan in the Russian Federation.  I met her on a trip to Kazan in 1999 and we became close friends.  I became part of her family and celebrated Noviy Got (Hogmanay) with them seven times in a row.  Most of her mother's side of the family died young from an inherited haemorrhagic stroke condition, as did her brother and ultimately, Sveta herself.  Her last words to me were, "Chris, I'm going to die. Promise me you'll take care of Katya."  (Her 25 year old daughter)

Life without Svetochka is ochen skuchno, very dull.

Your grove of trees

The trees in this grove will be carefully planted in protected sites in the Scottish Highlands where they will create homes for wildlife and forests for the future.

Scots pine against a summer blue sky.
Twinflowers in bloom on pine woodland floor.
A Scotch argus butterfly on common ragwort.
In memory of Dr. Svetlana N. Orekhova's grove
