Dundreggan Seasonal Nursery Assistant

Trees for Life is expanding its tree nursery and is looking for a Seasonal Nursery Assistant to work with the Nursery Supervisor on all the day to day tasks in the nursery.  The nursery not only grows trees for planting on Trees for Life's own land, but also grows trees for other mountain woodland projects, specialising in trees of high elevations.  It also specialises in growing aspen trees of local provenance, and two new polytunnels in November 2014 mean that we can now expand our work on these key projects.

Good organisational and accurate record keeping skills are essential for the Nursery Assistant who will be involved in a range of tree propagation tasks such as taking cuttings, sowing seeds, pricking-out seedlings, potting up trees, watering, weeding, planting out seedlings in beds, and maintaining tools and equipment.  It is a largely practical job and sometimes involves working out in all types of weather.  Supervision of others on the nursery, such as groups of volunteers, will also be required at times.

Trees for Life's Nursery is located at Dundreggan Conservation Estate in Glenmoriston, 35 miles SW of Inverness.  Set in stunning scenery, Dundreggan is an expanse of wild land where Trees for Life is working to expand the Caledonian Forest, and there may be opportunities for the Nursery Assistant to help with forest restoration work on the wider estate.

The Nursery Assistant is a seasonal role from March to August 2015.  A keen interest or experience in horticultural production or gardening will be advantageous, but not essential, to the applicant.

Please return completed application forms by 22nd January and address any questions to Jill Hodge at jill@treesforlife.org.uk.  Interviews will take place on 29th January 2015 at Dundreggan Estate.

Long term volunteering placements

Trees for Life is expanding its Long-term Volunteer Programme and is providing opportunities for enthusiastic individuals to gain experience in practical conservation work at Dundreggan Conservation Estate. Dundreggan is an expanse of wild land near Loch Ness where Trees for Life is working to expand the Caledonian Forest. Set in stunning scenery, Dundreggan is 35 mile SW of Inverness.

As part of a team of volunteers you will work on a range of innovative conservation projects with a focus on native woodland establishment and regeneration. Tasks will include working on our expanding tree nursery, tree planting, fertilising, felling and ring barking non-native trees. There will also be opportunities to join our regular residential groups and day volunteers.

We are offering placements for one to three months from March - October 2015. We will provide accommodation and a weekly food allowance along with relevant training. Volunteers will need to have a good level of fitness as there are long walks across mountainous terrain to most planting sites. Volunteers will be required to work for five days each week and may also be asked to work at weekends.

Please return completed application forms to Kirsty Ellen at kirsty@treesforlife.org.uk or call or email for further details (01309 691292).
