The Immanent Grove

Memorialising the achievements of the University of Glasgow's Fantasy graduates

Add to this grove
"It is said that the trees of the grove themselves are wise."
Welcome to the Immanent Grove, a collection of trees planted by members of the Centre for Fantasy and the Fantastic at the University of Glasgow to honour the graduates of our Fantasy MLitt programme. The trees form part of the Trees for Life project, which aims to rewild the ancient Caledonian forest by planting saplings at remote sites in the Highlands of Scotland. No one knows exactly where each tree will be; we know only that each will make a small contribution to enriching a larger whole. In this way each tree is like a student of fantasy, each of whom makes a small contribution to a new but rapidly expanding field of study with its roots in the past, just as our growing Grove has its roots in soil that has been enriched by ancient trees. We have named our widely-scattered Grove the Immanent Grove after a wood on the Island of Roke in Ursula Le Guin’s classic fantasy series, the Books of Earthsea. Many people think that this wood ‘moves about in a mystifying manner’; but in this they are mistaken, Le Guin informs us, ‘for the Grove does not move. Its roots are the roots of being. It is all the rest that moves’. May our wood, planted in the name of our graduates who are moving on, help to move the world on, too, in a better direction.

“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together … all things connect.” —Chief Seattle Cheers to the MLitt Fantasy cohorts past, present, and future! May our connections continue to better the world.

"You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone's soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows that they might do because of it, because of your words." (The Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern)

In gratitude for the delightful memories I made, for the love, wonder and fantastical things I found on this brief but life-altering adventure. For "anyone who has tasted fairy fruit walks through life beside other people to a different tune from theirs" (Hope Mirrlees).

“There’s still that gravity. What people expect. But… birds feel gravity, too. And acrobats, and dancers. And they dive and swoop and tumble anyway.” (Loki: Agent of Asgard #17) The strongest storms create the strongest birds, so fly on, and let the wind carry you ever higher.

Some sirens will call you to that island where bitter winds never reached. It’s called Comfort Zone, Stability, Stagnation, and its sirens sing of the horrors awaiting, unless you sail directly in their arms. Close your ears, follow your dream and dare to find a new Ithaca along the way.
