I am passionate about Trees for Life. Not only the idea of replanting the Caledonian Forest, replacing trees, helping the environment – but being able to plant a tree for a friend. So I have dedicated a tree to each of my friends, that can grow within a grove of all our trees and that can grow alongside us for the next half a century (perhaps!) and beyond. I’ve carried on growing it over subsequent years as younger sisters, cousins and friends have reached this milestone.
I had planned to go on a Trees for Life volunteer week during my 50th year. It didn’t happen in 2021 for obvious reasons, but I finally spent a blissful week in Glen Affric in October 2024 with a brilliant group of people. We planted 1,000 trees between us over three days.
When I set up the grove, I metaphorically planted each tree. As I physically planted each tree, I thought of the friend it was dedicated to, marked its location using the what3words app and took a photo, which I have now sent off to everyone.
