Anne Lister (1791-1840) was an English landowner, entrepreneur, avid traveller, keen horticulturist and diarist. Throughout her life, she kept diaries that chronicled the details of her day-to-day, her lesbian flirtations and intimate relationships, her many travels and her work improving her Halifax (West Yorkshire) Estate, Shibden Hall. Her diaries contain more than 5m words, 1/6 of them written in crypthand, a code which she derived, to write about every detail of her relationships with other women. From May 1828 onwards, Anne travelled by stagecoach, steamboat, carriage and on foot throughout Scotland. She explored from the Scottish capital to the Inner Hebrides, together with her companion, Scottish noblewoman Sibella MacLean from the Isle of Mull. In her memory we have set up the Anne Lister Trees for Life Grove with kind support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to coincide with the launch of a walking tour of Anne and Sibella in Edinburgh.
