Our nursery is growing its millionth tree. Help us grow millions more.
Our millionth tree is currently growing at the Dundreggan tree nursery. Behind that milestone are years of care: seeds gathered from Highland woodlands, cuttings coaxed into growth, and young trees tended until they are ready for life in the wild.
Each tree makes room for more plants and animals: food for insects, shelter for birds, and, in time, seeds from which woodland can spread again.
We specialise in rare and hard-to-grow native species, many of which cannot be sourced from commercial nurseries. ‘Wee trees’ such as woolly willow and dwarf birch belong to Scotland’s mountain woodlands – a habitat that has almost disappeared. Helping them return brings back a missing part of the forest, and the wildlife that depends on it.
Growing them takes skill and patience. For some of our native willows, seed must be collected at exactly the right time and sown within days if it stands a chance of growing. For aspen, our team gathers pollen and carefully brushes it onto flowers by hand to help it set seed.
There is a person behind each of those small beginnings: someone who knows when to collect, how to sow, when to water, and when a young tree is ready for its next step. Our experienced staff, seasonal workers and volunteers give these plants the care they need, season after season.
Will you help us raise £25,000 so we can work towards another million trees?
Any surplus funds raised by this appeal will be used by Trees for Life to fund other activities which will help rewild the Scottish Highlands.
