What we do

Missing Species Appeal

We are fundraising £25,000 to support our Missing Species Programme which is bringing back Scotland’s lost keystone animals – the architects of the wild.

By restoring these species, we revive natural processes, boost biodiversity, build climate resilience, and inspire people to rediscover the wonder of a wilder Highland landscape.

Trees for Life is rewilding the Scottish Highlands. Below are several of our ongoing projects which will help us to achieve this mission.

Affric Highlands

An ambitious proposal to form a coalition of landowners and communities across a large area of the central Highlands.

Caledonian Pinewood Recovery

This project is saving Caledonian pinewood remnants by encouraging their active management.

Red Squirrel Reintroduction

We carefully capture red squirrels from their strongholds and transport them to new forests.

Tauros

We are working towards releasing a social herd of wild tauros cattle, similar to the ancient and extinct aurochs, at our Dundreggan estate.

Beaver Reintroduction

We are working to reintroduce beavers to the Scottish Highlands.

Lynx to Scotland

Lynx to Scotland is a comprehensive study to accurately evaluate the social feasibility of returning lynx.

Tree Seed Collection Project

Enhance the availability of native trees from western Scotland by collecting seeds.

Wild Pine Project

Locating and assessing the health of lost Caledonian pinewood remnants across the Highlands in partnership with Woodland Trust Scotland.

Cairngorms Aspen Network

Mapping the location, condition and health of one of Scotland’s rarest native trees in partnership with the Cairngorms National Park Authority.

Planting trees

We have established over two million trees and our work will continue until we have grown millions more.

Supporting volunteers

We work with individuals, businesses and other charities to bring people closer to nature.

Dundreggan

Our flagship rewilding estate – home to our tree nursery and the world’s first rewilding centre.
